Me and My Glass Penguins

May 28th, 2010 Friday

We got up early and left for Venice today. I liked Venice but not as much as Florence. It was a very nice day though, but it was bit like the day to Versailles. When we arrived at the train station we noticed it is in Maestrea (sp?) which is the town on the mainland this is right next to Venice. Ok, how do we get onto the island?? Why does traveling always have to be so hard? We bought a bus ticket finally and took the bus over. Wow. I mean what can I say? Its Venice! Just about everything you've imagined. The cute small canals, the beautiful tall buildings, yep its venice! We stopped to eat pizza in a small little resturant. Um... yeah... best pizza I have ever tasted!!! Yum, Yum, Yum!!! Then we just kind of wandered the streets and looked at all the things being sold. We decided that it would be cool if we went over to the island Murano, which is just north and is famous for its glass blowing. Well easier said then done. Do me a favor- google a map of Venice and then you'll see what I mean. The streets are very very haphazzard and there is no way to walk in a straight line for more than 2 blocks. Geez! Once we found our way to the other side we tried out Venice's public transportation: boats! Got to the isalnd and it was every bit as pretty, but a little less tourists, which was nice. And when they say they do, they do glass! Just about anything you can think of was there! I have always wanted a glass penguin but Ive never been able to find one. Murano is filled with them!!!! EEEEEEeeeeee!!! So I got one, then I got two more, then Tawny bought me a big one, then I bought two more! hehehe! Well I love penguins so I figured I would live it up!

Shopping was fun (only not) because we had to have our backpacks with us the entire day. Carrying backpacks while glass shopping doesnt really mix ya know. So we tag team shopped. Awesome! Yet another reason to trave with a buddy. Once we had our fill of Murano we attempted to get back to Venice. I say attempted because we got on the wrong boat. Instead of going back we got a nice scienic view of Murano... or would have if we weren't on the lower deck! After straigtening that out we went to find a place for dinner. I had my heart set on lasagna. We found a place that offered a 3 course meal for like 12 euros so we tried that. Yuck. It was a let down, but what angered me was the same thing from the previous night- horrible service. Maybe thats a European thing? We waited for our bill for about 20 minutes and asked for it twice during that time! When we finally got out of there it was night and the grand canal was all lit up. What a beautiful sight! I even got a few good pics.

And then to get back to Mestre. Ha... Ha.... Ha... Good times in public transportation. It was horrid. We took the bus back but it was night, the bus was crowded, and we couldn't notice anything. Here is a travel tip. When in a different country where you dont speak the language and you need to take a bus, pray that you can communicate your stop to the bus driver and do it before you leave. We totally missed our stop. Then at the end we had to try to talk with the bus driver. He finally got us there. Oye! And then we just waited at the train station for awhile cause our train didnt arrive till 1 a.m.! What a day! Filled with hassles in transportation, amazing sights, and adventures in dining! Oh and i was eaten to death by mosquitos!!! Seriously, I have probably like 10 or so bites!!
