Another Class

Today I had my history class- Reconstructing Local Histories: Medieval Devon. It wasn’t on the main campus so I had to figure out where it was. It actually was quite close to campus though, and therefore it wasn’t too bad- just about a 5 minute walk. The class was in a serious of old houses turned office buildings. It was really quite cute. The class was really good. The professor is really strange, but in a funny good way. And he is very nice, so far. An hour into the class he gave us a twenty minute break where we went downstairs and had some coffee. It’s a small class, so we had fun just chatting amongst ourselves. There are 11 people in the class and 3 of them are American, and the professor takes this into account when he is talking about various regions of England. Which is quite good, because my British geography isn’t that great. Although, I was proud of myself when he was talking about the fact that some regions gave their names to foods. He asked if we knew of any examples, and I just happened to remember Champagne. Go me! It was even the example he had down in his notes. Very cool! Ahhh to have rare moments when I feel smart! Hehehe. Then he went on about names of places being connected to people’s last names, where he kept using me as an example. “Well Houston…” But the funny thing was, was that he didn’t pronounce it the way I do. He kept saying it like “who-ston”. It was quite funny. When class was done, he showed us all around the house/building. It has its own library that we can use, but the heater in the room is broken and it was freezing in there! It might as well have been outside, it was that cold! Well when I was finished with that, I headed back to the campus and attempted to switch my first class that I have on Mondays. The person wasn’t in the office and I was told to come back later. So to fill time I went into the city centre to look around with the new girl in my hall. Wow! Leicester has quite a hopin city centre! It was amazed at how big it was and all the shops that were there. While I was down there I got myself a cell phone. Yay! It was like 20 pounds and it’s a pay as you go phone. But I receive free incoming calls, so if anyone has cheap international calls and would like to call me- just email me and I will give you the number! Well after my little shopping excursion I went back to the campus to try and sort out my classes. It turns out that the history class I wanted to take is full. Darn! And they didn’t really have any other good history classes that I wanted to take, so I went over to look at the archeology department. Over there, I just decided to switch out of my Iron Age Britain and into Roman Ceramics. So I hope this class is a little better. It sounds a little more hands on, which sounds fun. So anyways, that class starts tomorrow. Hmmm….lets see…do I have any fun facts to tell you today? Well I don’t want to repeat myself, but have I told you guys about “napkins” yet? They aren’t called napkins here supposedly. They are called serviettes. A napkin is like a diaper for a baby. But then again, I thought I saw the word napkin labeled in the kitchen today when I was there for my history class. Hmmm…odd. Well I’m afraid that all I got for you guys today. Till next time!

Roman Ceramics should be really interesting. I'm glad you have a funny/weird teacher too! It's so nice to have people who enjoy what they do teaching. My classes have been a little wild. My fav is the bugs class. Odd, I know. Can't wait to read more about classes and excursions. You're so lucky to be in such an interesting place. Although I must say, calling a napkin a serviette would be an interesting stretch for me. Knd of like loo and toilet, eh?

Apparently 'serviette' is working class and 'napkin' is upper class. Welcome to a deferetial, class based society!
